Exhibit Archives:
The Cabinet for the Curious
Every month this case will feature an exhibit based on a theme highlighting
some of the treasures in the museum’s collection. Each will share
stories of Dundas, along the way.
October: Seeing Red.
The objects presented in this month’s installation of the Cabinet
for the Curious have been selected by a rather arbitrary process. Rather
than grouping objects by function, provenance or type, the challenge
was to choose objects that only had one feature in common – the
fact that they are red. The result is an exhibition that both shows
the diversity of the collection, and sets up unexpected relationships
between objects. You can decide for yourself what else these objects
might have in common!
August/September: Size
Small: The Tools of Childhood. For generations, many toys have been
designed to prepare their small owners for the adult world they would
eventually occupy. Miniature versions of adult objects allowed children
to role play within what would be their assigned spheres, often distinctly
assigned by gender and class. The objects featured in this month’s
Cabinet are a small sampling of the many toys in our collection that
have these characteristics. Which one would you most like to play with?
June/July: Law and Order!
Hand cuffs we’ve heard of, but truncheons? Dark lanterns? Rattles?
This month, the Cabinet for the Curious introduces us to the tools of
a police constable’s work keeping the valley safe in Dundas past.
Do come and see!
Passage
to Freedom: Secrets
of the Underground Railroad (January 7 - Feb 25, 2005)
Did you know…
Between 10 and 11 million Africans were captured to be sold into
slavery.
Approximately 40,000 people escaped slavery and found freedom in
Canada. [more information]
