Finishing Touch: The Milliners’ Art & The Hatters’ Trade
March 21, 2010 – July 4, 2010
Guest Curators, Norma Shephard, of the Mobile Millinery Museum, and John McMicking of L & H Hats, share their passion for hats in this entertaining and informative installation.
At one time every Canadian city, town and village boasted a skilled
milliner from whom you could purchase an Easter bonnet, mourning
hat, or simple schoolgirl charmer. Men’s hats were worn as an article
of clothing, not just as an accessory. A gentleman doffed his hat to a man
of higher social status or age, and always to a lady and her
escort. There was a hat for every occasion.
A hat for every occasion. Celebrate Spring in this
exhibition at the Dundas Museum & Archives. |

Picturesque Dundas…. On Sale
A reproduction of the 1896 publication
“This souvenir is issued in order to put on record in
enduring form
some of the attractions of a historic Canadian town.”
These words are drawn from the preface of Picturesque Dundas, printed in 1896. The book’s pages captured community life as it unfolded that year in Dundas, Ontario.
Families look out from porches of their homes. Drivers, ready with horse and buggy, pose in front of business establishments. Choir members and sports teams focus earnestly on the camera. We understand that participation in the project was publicly advertised, with $3 charged for each photograph taken for inclusion. Facts and details of the town were added to the photos. The 2,500 volumes printed sold out.
The publication was reprinted by the Dundas Historical Society Museum in 1972. Modern day addresses were added to the original text, along with identification of group participants.
In this second reprinting (2005) modern day addresses have been updated. Page numbers, and an index, have been added. The remainder of the book’s contents, including the cover and style of binding, are reproductions of the original, “issued in order to put on record in enduring form some of the attractions of a historic Canadian town”.
Copies are available at the Museum for yourself, or for gift giving.
